Peer Support Services for Abused Women has a very active Volunteer
Program. Volunteers are utilized in every facet of the agency,
as Board Members, Committee Members, Community Relations Volunteers,
Group Facilitators, Mentors, Child Care Workers, Special Events
Volunteers and Administrative Assistants. Volunteer time commitments
are flexible and vary from position to position. A minimum of
a one-year commitment is required. A full training program is
offered to all volunteers and is done in part with other family
violence service providers. New volunteers are accepted on an
ongoing basis.

Moving
on With Mentors
This program offers individual support to women
who have left, or are attempting to leave an abusive relationship.
Peer mentors are trained volunteers who are often survivors of family
violence and can be helpful in supporting other women in their process.
Peer mentors are available to meet with women in person or by telephone
to discuss issues related to their life circumstances and to offer
support where needed.
Women Hurting Women
Through the Women Hurting Women Workshops,
domestic violence service providers receive education on how to
make their services more relevant to lesbians and bisexual women.
Through various promotional campaigns, lesbian and bisexual women
are informed about services in the community that are able to address
their concerns. Women Hurting Women is run in partnership with an
advisory committee of dedicated women from the lesbian community
and their allies.
Finding Our Voices
Each month, skilled facilitators offer a one-day
introductory workshop to women interested in enhancing their self-esteem.
Open to all women, this workshop provides a day of learning and
support. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the concept
of self-esteem, the impact of negative self-talk, the significance
of self-care, and the importance of "Finding Our Voices"
through assertive behavior. Follow up workshops targeting specific
self-esteem issues are offered throughout the year to all women
attending the introductory session.
Growth
Circles
Growth Circles are offered to women who have
left, or are in the process of leaving, an abusive relationship.
In Growth Circles, participants share their experiences and learn
from each other. Some of the topics addressed in Growth Circles
are the dynamics of violence, anger, parenting and family of origin.
Growth Circles take place in neighborhoods throughout Calgary. Childcare
is provided during the groups. Growth Circles may be offered in
different languages and some are designed for lesbian and bisexual
women.
