Whether it’s through direct service, capacity building, education or advocacy, our job is to empower people, organizations and communities to break the cycle of violence. We do this by curating environments and mindfully facilitating the process of building awareness, expanding knowledge and developing skills. In short, we empower people to be in healthy and respectful relationships.

We updated our brand and created a new name.

30 years ago we opened our doors because a group of women, including a crisis counsellor and a survivor, recognized a gap in services for women leaving first stage shelters. Over the years, we have grown and expanded our programs and services to respond to the needs of the populations we serve – in Calgary and throughout Alberta.

We are best known for our peer support services, but the fact is, we do much more than that. Our programs and services include:

  • Direct Service – peer support groups, one-on-one mentorship, support for sex workers, volunteer training.
  • Capacity Building – agency partnerships, education and training about domestic violence in LGBTQ* communities, support to informal networks, knowledge sharing regarding best practices, our model and approach.
  • Education and Advocacy – Sagesse is the backbone agency for the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective (CDVC) – a member-based, coordinated community response to end domestic violence.

We wanted our brand to inspire people.

We chose the name Sagesse because it illustrates the idea of empowerment.

The literal translation of Sagesse is wisdom. Wisdom to seek help…support and connect…share knowledge…self-reflect…create space for healing, learning and growth. And ultimately, wisdom to develop new ways of being and thinking about ourselves and relationships
