This program offers individual support to women who have left, or are attempting to leave an abusive relationship. Peer mentors are trained volunteers who are often survivors of family violence and can be helpful in supporting other women in their process. Peer mentors are available to meet with women in person or by telephone to discuss issues related to their life circumstances and to offer support where needed.
This one day workshop is aimed at sensitizing service providers to the unique issues faced by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer community who are victims of domestic violence. Topics covered include heterosexism, homophobia, as wells as myths and stereo-types concerning Lesbians and Gay men. The dynamics of same-sex battering relationships is be discussed, as well as clinical issues and ways that agencies can make themselves more accessible to the LGBTQ community. This workshop is recognized by the Alberta College of Registered Social Workers and provides attendees a total of 6 Category A Continuing Competency Credits
Each month, skilled facilitators offer a one-day introductory workshop to women interested in enhancing their self-esteem. Open to all women, this workshop provides a day of learning and support. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the concept of self-esteem, the impact of negative self-talk, the significance of self-care, and the importance of "Finding Our Voices" through assertive behavior. Follow up workshops targeting specific self-esteem issues are offered throughout the year to all women attending the introductory session.
Growth Circles are offered to women who have left, or are in the process of leaving, an abusive relationship. In Growth Circles, participants share their experiences and learn from each other. Some of the topics addressed in Growth Circles are the dynamics of violence, anger, parenting and family of origin. Growth Circles take place in neighborhoods throughout Calgary. Childcare is provided during the groups. Growth Circles may be offered in different languages and some are designed for lesbian and bisexual women.
